For a long time, boxy hardcore SUVs have been known as one-sided vehicles. Off-road-focused models tend to feel stiff and bumpy during daily city commutes, bulky to drive, and thirsty for fuel. Family-oriented urban SUVs deliver a comfortable ride, yet they lack confidence once you leave paved roads. For many years, off-road capability and everyday driving refinement have seemed mutually exclusive.

That was my biggest question before testing the Trumpchi Yue7. This plug-in hybrid boxy SUV comes equipped with three differential locks and air suspension. Is it merely a family SUV with a rugged appearance, or a practical off-roader that remains easy to live with day-to-day? We set aside dry specification sheets and drove it through city streets, highways, mountain roads and rough country trails to evaluate its real-world driving feel across all terrains.

City Commute: Shedding the Clumsy Hardcore SUV Vibe, Gentle for Daily Use

At first glance, the Trumpchi Yue7’s 5-meter body and square styling lead you to expect a cumbersome large vehicle. But once you sit behind the wheel and pull away, that worry quickly fades.

At low speeds, the steering is tuned for family use. The weighting is light and linear, without the heavy feel or excessive dead zone common on traditional off-road vehicles. Navigating city traffic, turning around in residential compounds or parking along curbs requires little steering effort; even less experienced drivers can handle it easily. Despite its wide body, the vehicle responds promptly to steering inputs, with none of the sluggishness you often get from large SUVs at low speed.

Thanks to its plug-in hybrid powertrain, urban trips can run entirely on electric power. Acceleration is smooth and quiet. There is no low-speed jerking or idle vibration you get from petrol-powered off-roaders. In rush-hour stop-and-go traffic, power transitions seamlessly, creating a relaxed ride that fits family driving needs perfectly.

The chassis damping stands out most. In comfort mode, the dual-chamber air suspension has a supple tune. Small road imperfections, manhole covers and speed bumps are well absorbed, so harsh vibrations rarely reach the cabin. On paved city roads, its ride quality surpasses many traditional hardcore SUVs in this segment, feeling more like a premium urban SUV.

It is not without trade-offs, though. The square body shape creates slightly more wind noise at high speeds compared to streamlined SUVs. Its large dimensions also make tight alleyways and compact parking spots challenging, so you will rely heavily on the panoramic camera and transparent chassis view, which may take some getting used to for new drivers.

Highway & Winding Mountain Roads: Stable and Composed, Balancing Support and Agility

If city driving shows its gentle family side, highways and mountain bends reveal the strongest points of its driving character.

On the highway, the vehicle automatically lowers its body to reduce the centre of gravity. Even at 100–120 km/h, it stays firmly planted, free from the floating sensation many large SUVs display. When crosswinds hit or when overtaking heavy trucks, the body remains steady with minimal rocking, building plenty of confidence for long-distance cruising. When quick overtakes are needed, the hybrid system delivers power on demand. Acceleration is crisp, with no lag waiting for the powertrain to respond.

A major weakness of classic off-road vehicles is heavy body roll and a loose chassis through corners, which can make mountain driving tense. The Trumpchi Yue7 fixes this. On continuous winding mountain roads, the SDC adaptive dampers tighten suspension support automatically to limit body roll. During steady cornering and lane changes, the chassis feels solid and cohesive, with no unnecessary sway. It follows the road naturally.

For long journeys, the factory advanced driver assistance system significantly cuts driver fatigue. It handles curve cruising, adaptive follow and speed adjustments smoothly, without abrupt braking or acceleration. It works well on mountain routes and highways, making it ideal for frequent long-distance travellers.

Unpaved Trails & Mild Off-Roading: Real Off-Road Capability, Effortless Adventure

For this adventure-focused boxy SUV, unpaved terrain is where it truly shines. We tested it on gravel tracks, rutted dirt roads and muddy sections after rain. The overall impression is clear: it has a low learning curve and high tolerance for mistakes, even for novice off-road drivers.

Switching to off-road mode raises the body and maximises ground clearance. When rolling over gravel and deep potholes, the suspension has ample travel to absorb impacts. Shocks from deep ruts and steep slopes are largely filtered out before reaching the cabin, delivering a supple and stable ride.

When facing cross-axle situations or wheels lifting off the ground, the four-wheel-drive system and three locks engage smoothly and intelligently. The AI all-terrain system automatically recognises surfaces such as sand, mud and gravel. When wheels start to slip, the differential locks engage gently to redistribute power. The whole recovery process is quiet and controlled, without jarring impacts to the chassis. There is no need for complicated manual input from the driver.

Low-speed crawl control is a game-changer for beginners tackling off-road slopes and rough trails. The driver only needs to focus on steering, while the vehicle manages throttle and braking automatically to maintain a steady pace. It eliminates stall risks, rollback and wheel slip caused by clumsy manual pedal work. On the muddy post-rain trail we tried, grip stayed consistent and the body held its line without getting stuck. It also handles shallow water crossings reliably, perfect for camping trips and light backcountry exploration.

Still, we need to state its limits clearly. The Trumpchi Yue7 is built for family overlanding, not extreme off-road competition. It handles 90% of outdoor scenarios: country dirt roads, mountain trails, river shallows and grassland or hard desert routes. It is not designed for heavy rock crawling or driving through deep soft sand dunes. This compromise is intentional, to preserve the comfortable ride required for daily family use.

Overall Driving Impression: Dual Personality for All Scenarios

After the full test drive, the core strength of the Trumpchi Yue7 becomes obvious. It breaks the old stereotype that hardcore SUVs must sacrifice everyday comfort for off-road ability, or vice versa.

On city streets and highways, it acts as a refined, quiet family SUV. The light steering, well-tuned suspension and efficient smooth power suit commuting and long family trips. Leave the tarmac, and it instantly switches to its rugged identity. The solid chassis, reliable locking system and generous ground clearance support most outdoor camping and exploration plans.

Instead of stacking hardcore hardware at the cost of on-road comfort, the Yue7’s greatest achievement is making serious off-road capability accessible to ordinary drivers. For buyers who want a vehicle that handles weekday commutes reliably and delivers fun outdoor trips on weekends, this balanced all-round driving feel is its most practical advantage.
